Last-minute shoppers cram inside stores such as Filene's Basement at Mid-Pike Plaza in Maryland. It's one of many strip malls on Rockville Pike.

We caught up with Valarie Thorpe at Toys R Us where she shopped for her niece...

She was surprised that the store was not so crowded…

IT'S NOT AS BAD AS I REALLY EXPECTED. FOR THE LAST WEEKEND BEFORE CHRISTMAS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A LOT WORSE. BUT YOU KNOW THESE PARKING LOTS AREN'T MADE WELL THAT'S PROBABLY THE MOST CHALLENGING PART.

The National Retail Federation says discount and department stores will be the most popular spots this holiday season.
