NRDC Releases Annual Beach Water Quality Report

Washingtonians flocking to the beach should be happy to know coastal beaches on the Delmarva Peninsula are among the best for water quality.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has given
Ocean City, Maryland five out of five stars and Deleware’s Rehobeth, Dewey and Bethany Beach four out of five stars. Nancy Stoner is with NRDC. She says Chesapeake Bay beaches didn’t fair as well, dragging the state of Maryland down to a rank of 14 nationwide.

The beach rankings are new to the environmental group’s annual beach water quality report, which found there were fewer beach closings and health warnings to swimmers in 2007 than the year before.

NotionsCapital Critcizing Eastern Market Story

I thought it would be interesting to share this blog post written on the NotionsCapital website about the story I did on the restoration of Eastern Market's South Hall. (I have also pasted the text below)

The blogger criticized most of the media coverage on the event. The blogger is right to a certain extent. I should've included the date when Mel Inman-the owner of Market Poultry-moved across the street to the East Hall. However, the story wasn't about the East Hall, it was about the restoration of South Hall.

I always try to tell the whole story, which is why I brought Inman into the story. I think people need to understand, it's not an easy task to paint the whole picture when you have less than a minute to tell a story. Sometimes facts that are irrevelent to the main story get omitted.

But I will keep this blogger's post in mind for future stories. Any constructive criticism that will make me a better reporter is much appreciated. Thank you!

------------------------------------------

News stories about Washington’s Eastern Market filled the DC media yesterday, describing the restoration of the South Hall of the historic building, gutted by fire last year. Coverage noted that exterior work is largely complete, and renovation of the interior of the building has begun.

Except for an excellent report by NBC4’s Tom Sherwood and perfunctory throw-away lines by ABC7 news and the Examiner, though, stories omitted the fact that the market itself has been open for business and functioning for over a year, across 7th Street, SE, in the “East Hall.” Even a WAMU-FM radio story that included an interview with one of the merchants– Melvin Inman of Market Poultry — omitted this fact.

Eastern Market florist Anglie Brunson told Tom Sherwood about the drop in foot traffic since the fire, and the economic cost of this for merchants, farmers and vendors. If other news outlets continue to neglect the existence of the living, functioning Eastern Market fresh food marketplace, things will not improve.

The DC Government press advisory and news release from the Office of Property Management (OPM) didn’t help. OPM manages the property for the District and hires the market managers, but neglected mentioning on-going East Hall commerce, concentrating on photo ops of Mayor Fenty walking around the empty South Hall in a hard hat.

Perhaps reporters at WAMU-FM and the Washington Post included facts about the functioning East Hall when they filed their articles, but were ill-served by their editors. Certainly Post and Examiner readers, public radio listeners, Channel 7 viewers, residents of Capitol Hill, and the merchants of Eastern Market were.
